Mental health is more important than physical health

People think money is the actual wealth. But it is not the real one. We live in a society where no one talks about the Real Wealth. It is Health that is the real wealth. When the word “Health” comes in to picture we only consider our Physical Health. Have you ever thought of Mental Health being an important part of our Wealth?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of diseases”. So, when it comes to take care of our health, we have to take care of our Physical health and Mental health as well as social well-being.

In this article we are going to discuss why mental health is more important than physical health?

In general, both mental and physical health are essential to lead a healthy life-style. But if you ask my personal opinion, it is mental health that needs to be prioritized than physical health. Here’s why :

  • Physical well-being is tangible and anybody can notice the changes due to any physical illness and it can be treated with medical treatment. But mental fitness is always being a taboo till date and no one want to talk about it.
  • Mental health is a vast area that affects our lifestyle. It deals with our feelings and the difficulties we struggle with. People never give it importance and neglect their emotional health, Cause the society thinks it’s a sin to get mentally ill.

What is Mental Health ?

Mental health is associated with our emotional, psychological and the state of mind. The way we think, behave and react is completely related to our mental health. Mental health makes us who we are. It affects our daily routine and energy level.

So, it is as important as our physical health. In fact, it is much more important than physical health because sometimes mental illness affects physical health.

Human Brain is the most complex machine. No one till date understood how it is made and how it works. But it is the main part of our body that regulates every other body parts. In fact, it rules our whole system.

Type of Mental illness:

According to Healthdirect, there are nearly 300 mental disorders listed in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders .

Some of the main groups of mental disorders are:

  • mood disorders (such as depression or bipolar disorder)
  • anxiety disorders
  • personality disorders
  • psychotic disorders (such as schizophrenia)
  • eating disorders
  • trauma-related disorders (such as post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • substance abuse disorders
  • Sleep difficulties

Anxiety, Stress, Depression are the top listed mental illness that occurs now-a-days. But we never talk about these topics. But it is necessary to discuss and take necessary care for these as it affects us more than physical illness. Poor physical health can lead to an increased risk of mental illness. Similarly, poor mental health can impact our physical health.

Factors that can affect our mental health:

Loneliness

Being alone is one of the most difficult part of someone’s life. Human is a social animal who can never live alone. We need companion at different stages of life. So Loneliness affects our mental health. It is recommended to stay alone for sometime to evaluate yourself but being lonely for a long period of time harms our mental health.

Violence(Domestic or Family)

When we feel unsafe it creates a traumatic stage. Threatened by our family or near and dear one, being hurt physically or verbally, isolation are some of the types of domestic or family violence. It may happen within family or work place.

Grief and Loss

Loss of any important part or factor of our life causes grief. It might me loss of a dear one or beloved person, end in your relationship,loss of job, a miscarriage or separation etc.

Sleeping Problem

Loss in sleep also affects in our mental health. when we maintain a sleeping pattern on regular basis , we became more productive in our work. Absence of which leads to many problems like lack of concentration, changes in habbits, memory, mood swings and quality of life.

Alcohol and Drugs

When we go through tough time , we need some support. There are many people who takes alcohol and drugs as the remedy for their sorrow and bad time. But they never get reed of the same. Rather they fall for drugs and alcohol. Excess consumption of these things leads to many mental illness.

Final Words

No matter whether you feel down physically or mentally, always seek help from professionals. Because in both case, the earlier you get treatment, chances become high of speedy recovery. Physical health problem is easily visible and detectable where as mental health is neglected by many. But time has come to realise the value of mental health and give it priority more than physical health. We should understand that Mental Health Is More Important Than Physical Health.

Because “People never die of disease, they die of the fear of the disease.”
